Networking is the Future of Audio - An Introduction

(1 minute read)

In 2023, I started to delve into the world of computer networking by way of purchasing a NAS due to policy changes on my Dropbox business account. I needed a more cost effective solution. Little did I know how much I would love the networking aspect, but also how relevant networking is in audio. Before this, I was scared of even the thought of Dante. In the months since then, I have spent a lot of time learning about computer networking and how it applies to my life practically. The opportunities and applications are vast. I am fortunate to know some incredibly smart audio engineers who know more about networking than me and have inspired me to find more and more ways to use it. A massive amount of credit is due to Stephen Bailey and Webster Tileston.

Despite the complexity of computer networking, most people’s experience with networking is summed up in the phrase, “Do you have the wifi password?” Under the surface, once a device is connected to the local network, so much happens.

There is far too much for me to cover in the span of a few posts, but my goal will be to establish the basics that could help you understand just a little bit more of the potential of what is possible. From there, I would encourage you to continue to learn from other resources that are readily available online.

The world of computer networking is scary, intimidating, and confusing. I have not even begun to scratch the surface, but I promise that learning about it now is worth it.

If you have any questions, concerns, corrections, or just need help with an issue, I am always available via instagram or email!
